Janta Santosh Bhuvan

This small-ish eatery has been in the heart of Colaba market for years. But it is only recently that my yearning for misal pav, got it my attention. Actually, rather my husband’s attention.

Recently, I was so wanting to have misal pav and did not know any place close-by (around Colaba market) to eat from. My sweet hubby, came down to the market and approached this eatery. THEY SERVED MISAL PAV! And its good. I’ve now eaten here misal pav numerous times, and packed it for home as well on umpteen occasions.

Janta Santosh Bhuvan is located right in the center of Colaba market. It is at the corner of one of the lanes leading into the market center.

Its also known for its farsans. I have picked a few of them on occasions and they are very tasty. Mithais (sweetmeats) too are good. I would recommend this eatery be checked out by all who want a good snack. Another plus for it – its their tea. Its hot and refreshing at Rs. 10. I love the tea there. Sometimes I just go to the market on a pretext of running an errand, to have their tea. Only snack of theirs I have tasted and not liked are the bhajias.

Many of make boondi – raita at home. I endorse the boondi from this shop. Extremely crisp and fresh. Another must have – potato wafers. By far, they pack one of the best wafers in town. I have served it to many guests and all have asked me from where the wafers are, as they are excellent. Till a month back they retailed the wafers at Rs. 200 at kg, today it sells at Rs. 300 a kg.

I appreciate this shop for the snacks.  Its owner is a wonderful gentleman who mans the cash counter.

Hung Curd Dip

I enjoy making the Hung Curd Dip as my hubby relishes it. I usually make a big bowl of it on Friday so it lasts till Sunday evening.

We usually have it with a bag of potato chips. Sometimes, I add crudites (carrots and cucumber). We watch a movie, the dip and chips between us and a good 2 hours go by.

I like having carrots and Reliance potato chips with the dip. (See earlier posts).

Reliance Masti Oye – Saucy Tomato Potato Chips

Reliance Potato chips - Saucy tomato

Reliance Potato chips – Saucy tomato

Reliance is into potato chips!

Reliance – irrespective of whether it is Reliance of Anil Ambani or Mukesh Ambani – but these guys are now everywhere.

Reliance as a brand name was initially into Petro-chemicals, Natural Resources, then into Telecom. A few years ago, they got into Hypermarkets and Supermarkets, selling garments, then fresh produce and now POTATO CHIPS!

Well not just chips it is – its Bhujia’s and other packaged savories and ATTA – yes ATTA, and they now also sell spices such as Red Chili powder and Turmeric powder. They are now everywhere in a grocery store. Their mantra is very simple – manufacture a product – brand it and market it at the lowest price. That’s the way they slowly, but steadily garner the market-shares. SIMPLE.

Well, the Saucy Tomato is excellent. Its over achieves on the flavour. Very well spiced.

The number one spot for potato chips is still Pringles. However, Lay’s – the all time 2nd, is being given a run by Reliance, Diamond (featured earlier in my blog) and others. In the tomato flavour, I will always now pick Reliance or Diamond.

I bought this at Churchgate railway station. I did have a choice between this and Lay’s but as much as I enjoy Lay’s, thought I would try this brand.

Good choice.

It packs a whole load of zing and zest in every chip. You can’t have just one!

Where Lay’s gives you only 26g of net weight at Rs. 10, this gets you 40g at the same cost and tastes much more zing-ier than Lay’s Spanish Tomato flavoured chips.
