Havana Cafe n Bar

Did you know Polly Ester’s in now Havana Cafe n Bar?

Did you know that Havana Cafe is now running a promotion from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. everyday, wherein the Happy Hours menu has everything at Rs 72? (Mondays closed). These are exclusive of taxes and service charge at 10%.

I went there last week and had a great evening. It has a really good decor and seating is nicely arranged. Servers are prompted and very well-mannered. Service itself is prompt and efficient.

It was just the two of us, so we started with a shot each of the Blue Ocean. I followed it up with a Boulevard and my companion, with a beer. The shots were ok, so was the Boulevard.

However, the Veg Sharing Platter was the highlight for me. Its a well stacked up dish with small servings of potato wedges (called bravas), nachos, corn fritters, cheese jalapeno poppers and beer battered onion rings. The potato wedges were great, nachos average, decent corn fritters, yummy cheese jalapeno poppers and ditto for the onion rings. The salsa served with the nachos was strictly ok but I actually enjoyed having the nachos with the orange scented barbecue sauce from my companion’s plate – he ordered the Spicy Chicken Wings.

My companion enjoyed the wings and we then shared the Mini Veggie Lover’s Pizza (why Lover’s? I don’t know) We got 7 pieces of tiny cocktail, bite-size helpings – loaded with cheese and toppings. Great taste but was kinda spoilt with a garnishing of coriander leaves. That’s right – dhania! On a Pizza! Its definitely worth ordering the pizza but just inform them not to topped them of with the leaves  : )

Its a good place to sit back and enjoy great company with great music and decent food.

Woodside Inn

Had a good time – 18th April. Saturday evening.

Met 6 friends for early drinks at Woodside Inn. It was Happy Hours. Drinks included wine, white wine Sangria – it was the first time I had Sangria in white wine. I’ve always had it red, and surprisingly – white is far more pleasing as it is lighter in flavour. Then there was the Spiced Mojito and the Cosmopolitan. Oh. Not to forget the beers! We had all these and ordered some appetisers. Three appetisers and each one was really well-appreciated.

Potato skins with mayo wasabi (RS. 245). Pizza Margarita (Rs.395) and finally the Baked goat cheese bruschetta with tomato confit (Rs. 395). Ah! The bruschetta was fantastic. A nice layer of melted goat cheese on well toasted bread.

The Pizza was lapped up immediately by each one of us. Everyone commented on the perfection of the pizza. I was lucky to get the photograph of the pizza as it was served last. The other 2 dishes came in at together and we just dived into them. Hence, the below photograph of the potato skins doesn’t do complete justice to the dish. You can’t go wrong with potato skins. A good portion and with well-flavoured dip, made my evening.

Pizza Planet Sizzler

I am falling in love with this place!

restaurant front

Last weekend I went there in the evening for a quick bite. Its located at Woodhouse Road, Colaba. Pizza Planet Sizzler is actually a home-delivery concept restaurant, but accommodates walk-ins (like me). They have just 2 tables with 4 chairs each. I enjoyed sitting there, eating hot food with a chilled Coke and watching it rain outside.

I ordered my favourite snack – Chili Cheese Toast, a Coke and my hubby ordered an 8″ Chicken Barbecue Pizza.

The food arrived in 10 minutes. The food – piping hot and the drink – chilled – PERFECT!

The Chili Cheese toast was excellent. It just had a tad too much of coriander but the flavour was robust – delectable cheese-burst in the mouth with just the right amount of hot chilies. I added a few drops of Tabasco to give it an additional zing -yum….. This gets an 8 on 10 rating.

Priced at Rs. 16o. It would be nice to share these 8 pieces if having it for a quick bite or then its just right for a wholesome snack.

The Chicken Barbecue Pizza was fantastic as well.

Chicken Barbeque Pizza

Chicken Barbeque Pizza

Perfectly made, priced at Rs. 260, its an absolute delight. It gets an 8 on 10 as well. Its got a good amount of chunky chicken especially when you compare the size and number of pieces you would get from another pizza place, say a Domino’s.

Tonight for dinner, I ordered home a Vegetable Shashlik Sizzler. Its a sizzler with a veg patty, spinach, veggies, potato wedges and noodles in pepper sauce. I was told the delivery time would be 30-40 minutes and voila – my doorbell rang in 30 mins. Piping hot sizzler delivered to my doorstep avec sizzling plate as well. (they said they would collect the sizzler plate the next day). The top of the plate came enclosed in foil, so you can really imagine the food was really very very hot. We actually had to wait a couple of minutes before diving in, to eat!

Veg Shashlik sizzler

Veg Shashlik sizzler

I give this a 9 on 10 rating. Only a very hearty eater can finish this on his own, else it does require a bit of help to finish-up the plate. Just the thing to eat on a rainy night at home. Its priced at Rs. 475 – reasonable but would have preferred it if it was priced slightly lower. But I still will order this when I feel like a pepper sauce sizzler.

I would highly recommend this place for ordering a great meal at home. ANYTIME.

Leo’s Boulangerie

I love this place. During a period of 1 month, I would have visited this place about 5 times!

I have the pics of all the food I have eaten there except their Chutney n Cheese sandwich. Its really good. The sandwich reminds me of the one you get at NCPA when attending the theatre there. Only difference is that the sandwiches at Leo’s are bigger with more chutney and cheese. Priced at Rs. 60.

Recently for dinner, I had their Danish Croissant and Veg. Quiche. The Danish croissant has a corn and cheese filling with corn sprinkled on top of the croissant. I loved picking out the burnt corn and eating it and then I dived into the croissant. Its a lovely croissant.

The Veg. Quiche is a spinach, mushroom and cheese person’s delight. Its got a lovely texture and is almost a melt-in-your-mouth savoury. It looks like a medium sized quiche but it packs a load of taste. For its size, its quite a tummy-filler.

Finally, the Chocolate croissant – obviously : )

Its a nice big-looking croissant. Looking at it makes you salivate.

However, it flattens on pressing it slightly and fits well into the mouth. The chocolate flavour is good but find the layer too thin. I would have preferred if the chocolate layer was a tad bit more. However, I would still pick it up as an after-meal dessert if my meal has been a light one.

All the three savouries above are priced at Rs. 50 each.

I’ve eaten the veg pizza twice. The first time, I liked it a lot. However, the second time, though the taste was the same, it had a strong flavour of garlic, which I didn’t like – so will be hesitant to pick it up again.

Yet more things to try at Leo’s !

This bakery turned a year old in January 2014. Its located at Colaba, between the market and postoffice, on the main road. I have passed-by this route numerous times, seen this bakery but somehow never got my foot in.

Finally, went there last evening. Wanting a light eat for dinner, picked up a vegetarian fare of pizza and puff.

veg pizza n puff

veg pizza n puff

The pizza at Rs. 4o is a 4 1/2″ pizza with a good amount of filling and cheese (the american corn pieces are a tad too many). Its got a good flavour and makes a very good mini meal with the puff. The puff at Rs 20 is a spinach and paneer stuffed savory. The puff is light and its almost a melt-in-the-mouth mini feast. I really enjoyed this light dinner, which I had with homemade coffee. I am gonna go to this place more often – I mean it! Its good, fresh and tasty.

The bakery is well designed and has an extensive menu. It boasts of cakes, pastries, breads, cookies, brownies, sandwiches and savories such as quiche, rolls, croissants. Next, I am keen on trying are their breads and quiche.

Pizza Express

Located at Colaba, Pizza Express is just a minutes walking distance to The Gateway.

I love the decor as well as the way the tables are spaced out. The layout offers enough privacy as well as gives you the open-look at the same time. The staff are courteous and well informed.

As it was just an eat-in for 2, we ordered a diet Coke (Rs. 115), a Romana – American Hot with jalapenos. This is a 14″ stretched out thin pizza with pepperoni, mozzarella, tomato and choice of jalapenos or roquito (Rs. 640). Also ordered a Classic Margherita with additional toppings of jalapenos and caramelized onions (Rs. 390 +Rs. 40 +Rs. 40=Rs. 470).  Total bill with taxes as well as their 10% service charge came to Rs. 1,439.

The pizza were great. The American Hot was very appeasing. I was totally happy with the vegetarian one as well. However, probably the next time I may not add caramelized onions and try another topping. Flavours of both pizza were wholesome. Had a good meal. Would definitely recommend all pizza lovers to eat here. I shall go back for more.

Medfouna – Berber pizza

Again – A pizza!

No seriously, its not a pizza as we know it. Medfouna is a Moroccan baked flat bread with a flavorsome stuffing. Its a filling mainly of herbs and spices and meat. Its actually a calzone.

Medfouna literally means ‘buried’. In the ancient times, the burning coals would be doused in the sand. The bread would be lowered into this hot sand and covered till the bread cooked in the heat.

I had downloaded this recipe way back in 2011, but baked it only 2 days ago. I loved it. My neighbour loved it. I made the vegetarian version, so hubby said ‘liked’.

Prego Restaurant

logoI really, really like this restaurant. Been here twice in two months.

I love the presentation of the foods and the quantities are very decent. Every course, is sufficient for  one. Yesterday, for lunch we ordered Bell pepper tomato soup, Creamy chicken soup, Margherita pizza, a Beef steak slider and a Herbed focacia sandwich. Last month had ordered Creamy chicken soup with Grilled chicken breast with pepper sauce and Vegetable lasagna. Prices are exclusive of taxes and they charge a 10% service fee.

Merwans

logo

This place is so talked about. Its at Andheri, on the main road – S V Road, right outside Andheri (W) railway station. I have only been there once earlier, years ago. I don’t remember being much impressed by the place. However, I had a meeting near Andheri and hence planned to really try out Merwans, this time in all earnest.

Every few months, call it as a home dinner experience or just to break the routine, I do a wine / alcohol dinner with lots of finger food. So, this time I decided food from MERWANS. Crossed my fingers and selected an array of foods to have with the Sula wine at home. Fingers crossed, as, if it did not turn out to be good food, I had no fall back option at home but to do an order-in.

As expected, there was a crowd inside the shop. However, it was really nice to see all – the customers as well as the staff were well behaved. There was no jostling, pushing and screaming. Surprisingly, I got to the savories counter in 2 mins. Parceled Veg Pizza, veg Manchurian Pattice, Chicken and Garlic Pattice, Chicken roll (I got the last one. whew!), Dessert included Exotic Blueberry, White Forest and Butterscotch pastries and a Chocolate Roll.

Dinner time – poured the Sula into wine glasses, served with Haldiram’s Salted Peanuts and Diamond Potato Wafers. (details in following posts)

Out came the pattice, pizza and roll – all microwaved for 30 seconds.

I’m not much of a Chinese cuisine enthusiast, but this did taste good, though the filling was a tad less. But for Rs. 10 it was worth it.

I give it a 3 on 5

Veg pizza

This seems to be a hit at the shop. Many, many people were ordering it. Must say for a 5″ pizza, at Rs. 15 each, it was full of flavour. It was a typical local grocery/bakery made pizza flavour. Having no expectations, I enjoyed it.

I rate it a 4 on 5. I’m always partial to pizzas         : )

Doesn’t this look absolutely inviting? I took a big scoop. Just melted in my mouth. They have got the flavour bang on! However, it has less cake and more of the cream. Kudos on getting the flavour just right.

Looks very appealing but taste-wise it is ordinary.

At Rs. 20 I give it a 2.5 on 5

Topped this with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream and a ladle-full of hot chocolate sauce, it transforms to a 4 on 5

This ended our dinner, satiated and ready to sleep.

Pesto Pizza

Never thought a non-tomato based pizza could taste this good. Having no expectations from this topping, I was ecstatic with the result. Like almost everyone, I’ve always ordered a tomato-based pizza with various toppings. I’m pretty open to trying different toppings but never thought of a pesto pizza.
